Destined Passage Feature

Brittany Cavanaugh, an oceanographer from the year 2001, discovers a mysterious Haitian amulet on the ocean floor off the coast of Savannah, Georgia. A member of a prestigious team who will attempt to unravel the mystery surrounding the sinking of the Titanic, Brittany is left so disturbed when she witnesses the ship’s watery grave that she wishes she and her fiancé, Ian Buchanan, could have done something to stop the tragedy. In the next terrifying moments, she and Ian are swept through a mystifying tunnel that leads to the year 1912 and the teak decks of the doomed ocean liner. Their efforts to save the “unsinkable” ship prove fruitless and, they too, are left to try and survive the icy waters of the North Atlantic. A second plea opens the tunnel through time again, and Brittany’s desperate hold on Ian is broken. When the blinding light clears, she finds herself alone in the post-Civil War era, where she is mistaken for the leader of an elusive White Slavery Ring. She meets the infamous Jacques Devereaux, a Civil War blockade runner turned White Slaver, but her heart is torn when she must choose between the pirate and Clay Gentry, a southern gentleman who is in the midst of a desperate search for his missing twin sisters--and the President's daughter.

When Love Calls, You Better Answer

When Love Calls, You Better Answer Review

When Love Calls, You Better Answer Feature

The author of the hit Redemption Song returns with a sparkling new novel about looking for love in all the wrong places—and with all the wrong people.

Full of spirit and wisdom, the novels of Bertice Berry bring to life a rich tapestry of human experience. Now she turns her eye to matters of the heart, with an endearing main character who can’t seem to keep bad men out of her life.

Bernita Brown is a quick-thinking, tireless social worker who is good at practically everything—except love. Her first marriage ends in divorce, a painful experience Bernita refuses to think about. Instead, she dives into a series of sad relationships and overwhelming commitments to community and church. But not even church can keep her from being courted by dogs; Bernita’s married pastor begins making passes at her, then blames her for his backsliding. Along the way, the ghost of Bernita’s aunt Babe weighs in with plenty of advice (after all, Aunt Babe says, “You don’t need to be alive to tell folks how to live”). When a marvelous man finally enters Bernita’s life, only time can tell whether she will be able to trust him.

Written with Berry’s signature warmth and reliance on African-American ancestors who deliver homespun healing, When Love Calls, You Better Answer addresses a host of powerful topics, from abusive relationships to corrupt church leaders. Ultimately, Bernita’s story will inspire readers to find the love they need, especially the love that can only come from within.

The Fatal Englishman: Three Short Lives

The Fatal Englishman: Three Short Lives Review

The Fatal Englishman: Three Short Lives Feature

In The Fatal Englishman, his first work of nonfiction, Sebastian Faulks explores the lives of three remarkable men. Each had the seeds of greatness; each was a beacon to his generation and left something of value behind; yet each one died tragically young.
Christopher Wood, only twenty-nine when he killed himself, was a painter who lived most of his short life in the beau monde of 1920s Paris, where his charm, good looks, and the dissolute life that followed them sometimes frustrated his ambition and achievement as an artist.
Richard Hillary was a WWII fighter pilot who wrote a classic account of his
experiences, The Last Enemy, but died in a mysterious training accident while defying doctor’s orders to stay grounded after horrific burn injuries; he was twenty-three.
Jeremy Wolfenden, hailed by his contemporaries as the brightest Englishman of
his generation, rejected the call of academia to become a hack journalist in Cold War Moscow. A spy, alcoholic, and open homosexual at a time when such activity was still illegal, he died at the age of thirty-one, a victim of his own recklessness and of the peculiar pressures of his time.
Through the lives of these doomed young men, Faulks paints an oblique
portrait of English society as it changed in the twentieth century, from the Victorian era to the modern world.

Dead Tide Feature

Jeannine Kadow took readers on a "heart-stopping journey" (Washington Post) in BURNOUT, the searing novel that introduced hard-hitting TV anchor Lacie Wagner. In this early anticipated new thriller, Lacie Wagner has retreated to Nantucket to heal the physical and emotional scars of her fiery past. There, on the isolated island thirty miles out at sea, she feels safe, out of harm's way. But Lacie's tranquility is shattered when she finds a female diver's body washed up on shore. What starts out as the most explosive investigation of her career swiftly turns intensely personal.

A killer has chosen Lacie to tell his story, one of a terrifying unimaginable murderous obsession. Stonewallled by high-ranking military officers and blocked by law enforcement at every turn, Lacie joins forces with Nick St. James, a renegade manhunter who is as dangerous as the men he stalks. Together they run outside the law, straight into the heart of an unspeakable evil - a riptide that sweeps its victims one by one into the unfathomable depths of a watery grave.

Chilling and seductive, stunning in its intensity and unforgettable in its power, DEAD TIDE will leave you breathless.

The Devil Rode Shotgun

The Devil Rode Shotgun Review

The Devil Rode Shotgun Feature

"I remember we were riding up to Keystone, and it's not very far from Welch. Now you must remember I'm in junior high school, just in the 8th grade, just 14 years old. We're heading to a whore house for the first time, where my Uncles, Dad and cousins have been going to in years gone by. (I only heard this.) I'm not sure about it. I thought it was pretty nostalgic. I remembered Dad had taken me there when I was a young boy, looking for Lynn Ray. We make a right onto the circle in Cinder Bottom. Later I found out the other boys were just as scared as I was because it was their first time also. John's brother drives very slowly and women start coming up and leaning on the car. I do recall this very thing happening on my first visit. Roll the window down, stop the car and come on in "We got something for you." These were all black women".
